Type 4 Composite Cylinders

Testing Beyond Standards, Delivering Beyond Expectations.

Type 4 composite cylinders are the most advanced gas storage cylinders used for high-pressure gases like hydrogen and CNG. These cylinders are known for being ultra-lightweight, non-metallic, and capable of storing gases at very high pressures, often up to 1000 bar.

Key Features:

Liner Material:

  • Made from polymer (plastic) such as HDPE (high-density polyethylene).
  • Provides gas-tightness and chemical resistance.

Composite Overwrap:

  • Fully wrapped with carbon fiber.
  • Carbon fiber provides high strength-to-weight ratio.

Lightweight:

  • Up to 70% lighter than steel (Type 1) cylinders.
  • Reduces weight in vehicles → improves fuel efficiency and payload.

High-Pressure Rating:

  • Common working pressures: 250 bar, 350 bar 500 bar or 700 bar.
  • Burst pressure typically exceeds 2.25 times working pressure.

No Corrosion:

  • Since there is no metal contact with the gas, the cylinder is resistant to internal corrosion. This ensures a longer service life and enhanced safety by maintaining consistent strength.

Advantages of Type 4 Cascades

FeatureBenefit
LightweightHigher payload, reduced transport cost
Corrosion-freeLonger life, low maintenance
High pressure capabilityMore gas per volume
Safer under fatigueBetter performance over repeated filling cycles
